Spatial analysis of immune cells and their organisation in tissue.
Engblom is a SciLifeLab Fellow and Assistant Professor working on the spatial organisation of immune responses, and co-developer of Spatial VDJ (Science 2023).
Spatial VDJ co-captures B and T cell receptor sequences alongside spatial transcriptomics, so clonality can be reconstructed in situ. That makes it possible to ask which clones sit where, how B cell clones evolve within germinal centres, and how antigen specificity maps onto tissue architecture rather than onto a dissociated cell suspension.
Her group at SciLifeLab and the Center for Molecular Medicine applies this to B and T cell clonal dynamics during cancer, spatially and functionally.
She received her PhD in immunology from Harvard University in 2017, working in Mikael Pittet's lab at Massachusetts General Hospital on long-range interactions between cancer and host myeloid cells, and developed Spatial VDJ as an MSCA postdoctoral fellow in Jonas Frisén's lab at Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with Joakim Lundeberg's group. Her work is supported by SciLifeLab and the Wallenberg foundations.
